When you’re hiring a data projector for your presentation you will often come across a decision to be made – that is DLP or LCD projector. The differences are in many cases extremely technical, and the layman may end up more confused than ever! We have put together a very brief summary of what you need to know when hiring a projector.

DLP or Digital Light Processor is a new technology which allows a much smaller projector to be made. So if portability is important, for example if you are going on a plane with the projector, then it may pay to look at DLP. The DLP chips themselves are made by US company Texas Instruments, and they have been aggressively marketing the concept for some years. This gives them a perceived advantage over the LCD manufacturers who are all competing against each other.

The new breed of LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) projectors is however fighting back on the size front with the introduction of a new smaller panel, allowing manufacturers to create higher resolution portable projectors.

Both camps claim issues occur with the opposition:

DLP sometimes suffers from the 'rainbow effect' where the picture appears as a rainbow briefly noticeable when changing focus from one part of the screen to another. It appears as a secondary image that appears at the viewer's peripheral vision and is generally noticeable when shifting focus from a high contrast area or bright object. This does not appear in “3 chip” DLP projectors, but these tend to be very high end projectors in terms of price.

LCD sometimes suffers from what is called “screen door” effect, meaning the picture is pixilated and appears as if you're watching TV through a screen door. Again the newer LCD projectors have improved the aperture ratio to address this and it is much less of an issue than before. Similarly DLP projectors used to claim a much higher contrast ratio – i.e. blacks were much blacker than LCD; but some of the latest LCD models achieve a 6000:1 ratio, matching the best DLP ones.

Both types are going through constant changes and improvements, to the point where one cannot be said to have an overwhelming advantage over the other. So, unless you have a very specialized need for your presentation, go with the projector model that fits in terms of weight, size, brightness and price.

LCD vs DLPs

Two new technologies in the world of TV, DLP and LCD, are now in a stiff competition.

Some People say that there is problem of motion blur in LCD TV. It was correct before few years due to the processors in the LCD projections being slower than those in the DLP TV's. However, the sets that we are now looking at have a much faster processor in them, and therefore don't have the type of holdup or rainbow effect that the older units had. Not only that, but definitely like the picture quality is better on the LCD TV's. In fact, the LCD screen has several benefits over plasma. For instance, LCD screens run much cooler than the average plasma TV, and thus require less power to operate. Plasma TVs run so hot, in fact, that they require a fan to cool them down - which can be noisy. In addition, plasma screens have a tendency to degrade over time, slowly becoming dimmer. LCD screens, on the other hand, run relatively cool, and do not degrade over time. Some Plasma owners, who have used their TVs for a few years now, have already witnessed the dimming of their screens. Also, LCD screens tend to have overall better picture quality, and are typically 10 to 15 percent lighter than plasma

The problem with LCD TV is after given enough time, it appears that LCD panels, primarily those in the blue channel, will degrade, causing shifts in color balance and a reduction of overall contrast. The test did not include a large enough array of test units to draw any conclusions about anticipated rates of degradation under normal operating conditions

There are several unique benefits that are derived from DLP technology. One of the most obvious is small package size, a feature most relevant in the mobile presentation market. Since the DLP light engine consists of a single chip rather than three LCD panels, DLP projectors tend to be more compact. All of the current 3-pound miniprojectors on the market are DLP's. Most LCD projectors are five pounds and up.

Another DLP advantage is that it can produce higher contrast video with deeper black levels than you normally get on an LCD projector. DLP has ardent followers in the home theater world primarily due to this key advantage.

Thus due to stiff competition both LCD and DLP manufacturing companies are trying to improve the quality and are struggling for but at present DLP is having lead in it.

An Introduction To LCD Projectors

A projector is an apparatus for presenting an enlarged image on a screen from a transparency such as a photographic slide or a film. In a motion picture projector, each frame is held stationary at an illuminated aperture for a brief period, and then advanced by an intermittent sprocket or reciprocating claw, the light being cut off by a rotating shutter during the movement. The sound track on the film is reproduced at a separate sound head where the film is moved continuously at a constant speed.
